Are you a fan of the classic muffaletta sandwich? My Muffaletta Casserole is packed with ham, salami, olives and cheese. The flavors are true to the sandwich, and the casserole is ready in 30 minutes! It is also a fantastic recipe to use leftover ham.

I worked at a bar called Nicky's (check them out if you are in the Northeastern Wisconsin area) for a about ten years up until I had Kellen- who turns 8 tomorrow! Nicky's had an amazing version of a muffaletta sandwich. I have been a muffaletta lover since I first had the sandwich after my first night on the job.
This Muffaletta Casserole reminds me of one of my favorite sandwiches- cheesy, meaty, full of brine, and packed with flavor.
The other fantastic thing is that the recipe is very easy to put together with minimal chopping- perfect for a week night. Muffaletta Casserole is also an excellent recipe using leftover ham.
My family loves this recipe, and the leftovers reheat really well. We are olive loves and this will not disappoint! The casserole is also packed with delicious flavors from the ham and the salami.
Ingredeints
- Penne Pasta- see my notes under the pasta about different alternatives, like farfalle and fusilli.
- Grated Mozzarella Cheese- mozzarella works well because it melts great.
- Grated Parmesan Cheese- parmesan adds a great nutty flavor to the casserole.
- Ham- leftover have is great for Muffaletta Casserole, but packaged from the store or deli works great too.
- Genoa Salami- this salami has a great salty flavor, and it is seasoned well. I prefer a thinner slice for this casserole
- Olive Salad Mix- this is my favorite brand. Other brands work well too, or you can make it at home using Food and Wine's Olive Salad recipe.
- Canned sliced black olives- I love black olives, but if you feel there is enough in the olive salad you can omit the additional can.
- Black pepper
Instructions
- Preheat over to 350°F.
- Cook pasta according to package ingredients. Drain and place in a large bowl.
- Add ½ cup mozzarella cheese, ham, salami, olive salad, black olive, and pepper.
- Gently mix till all ingredients in the bowl together.
- Pour the pasta into a 9x13 casserole dish. It is not necessary to grease the dish because of the oil from the olive salad.
- Top with remaining mozzarella cheese and the parmesan cheese.
- Bake uncovered in the oven for 20 minutes. Serve.
Let's Talk Pasta!
I like to use penne pasta for my Muffaletta Casserole because it is a thicker pasta.
Other pasta options can include macaroni, farfalle, fusilli, rigatoni, or cavatappi.
Pastas like angel hair, thin spaghetti, and spaghetti work, but they aren't hollow and collect all the flavor.
