Burgers on a tray

It is #BBQWeek! I am celebrating all thing BBQ this week with a handful of amazing blogging friends. We are here to beef-up your recipe book just in time for grilling season!

I am starting the week with my Cuban Sandwich Burger. The Cuban is one of my favorite sandwiches, and making it into burger form for my grill is just delicious! I hand form my patties, add thinly sliced ham, swiss cheese, pickles, mayo, and mustard. If you are a Cuban Sandwich lover- these are the burgers for you!

Burgers held in hand

Here are a few helpful tip to make your Cuban Sandwich Burgers!

  • Use a miroplane grater to zest the orange and lime. The finer the zest the better for mixing into the burgers.
  • Make sure that the burger patties are not too round. The burgers will become very thick as they cook, and it will take a long time to come to temperature.
  • Thin sliced ham works best because you can pile it on top of the burger and top with cheese.
  • When in doubt a few extra pickles equals extra deliciousness.

Cuisine American
Servings 4 burgers

Ingredients

  • ¾ lb lean ground beef
  • ¾ lb ground pork
  • 1 teaspoon fresh orange zest
  • 1 tsp fresh lime zest
  • ½ teaspoon ground cumin
  • ½ tsp dried oregano
  • ½ tsp onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 8 slices thin smoked ham
  • 4 slices swiss cheese
  • 3 tablespoon mayo
  • 2 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 16 dill pickle slices
  • 4 hamburger buns (I suggest a sturdy bun because this is a hearty burger)

Instructions

  • Pre-heat grill to medium heat. Mix the mayo and mustard together and set aside.
  • Add beef, pork, zest, and seasoning to a medium bowl. Mix by hand until everything is evenly mixed.
  • Pat four burgers. Place burgers on the grill and grill 5 minutes per side. Once burger temperature has reached 150°F. Place ham and cheese on the burger. Allow the cheese to melt and burger to reach 160°F.
  • Remove burgers from grill. Spread the mayo/mustard sauce evenly on all burger buns. Add pickles, and place burgers on the buns.
  • Enjoy!

We had our first Cuban sandwich while staying in Tampa a few years ago. My husband loved it, so this burger would be a nice surprise for him!
