Bratwurst is a staple in summer and fall grilling in our house. I love a traditional sausage, but sometimes it is fun to change it up and make our brats burger style.

My Bratwurst Burgers are made is a homemade spice blend that puts them to the next level of savory flavor.

Served of a pretzel bun with sauerkraut, muenster cheese, and zesty mustard. These burgers are so delicious and you will love how easy they are to make.

These burgers are perfect for a game day, tailgate party, or an Octoberfest celebration!

What Makes a Brat a Brat?

"Brat" is German for chopped meat and "wurst" is the German word for sausage. Bratwurst as a unique spice blend that typically includes: pepper, caraway, ginger, and mace. Mace is a popular German seasoning and can be substituted for nutmeg.

Instructions

  1. Pre-heat grill to medium heat.
  2. In a medium bowl, mix together pork and all seasonings. By hand, mix well. Divide pork mixture into 4 patties.
  3. Place patties on the grill. Flip after 4 minutes. Cook for an additional 4 minutes or until meat reaches an internal temperature of 160°F.
  4. Top each brat with one slice of cheese. Remove from grill.
  5. Place bratwurst burgers on buns. Top with warmed sauerkraut and mustard. Serve.

Preparation Tips

If your brat burger is gray in color you need to turn up the heat on the grill. On the flip side, if the Bratwurst Burger gets black I recommend turn the heat down on the grill.

For the spices, if there is a spice that is not preferred or an allergy it can be left out and the burger will still have excellent flavor.
