Apple Cider Chicken Skillet is an easy savory meal prepared with seasonal fresh apple cider.

One of the things I look forward to the most in fall is drinking apple cider. I absolutely adore it. Hot, cold, in sweet dishes, and in savory dishes- so delicious.

I love to use apple cider in savory cooking because it is sweet, but slightly tangy. My Apple Cider Chicken Skillet is a seasonal recipe to use this favorite fall drink.

I quickly brown the chicken, add onions and fresh apples, deglaze the pan with apple cider, and let the oven do the rest of the work.

This meal is complete when served with garlic mashed potatoes and fresh green beans. So hearty and delicious, but easy enough for a weeknight meal.

What is the difference between apple cider and apple juice?

Apple cider is made from presses apples. It is typically raw and unfiltered. It typically does not contain additional sugar and is minimally processed, if at all. Apple juice is pasteurized and sugar is added. It is sweeter and typically has a longer shelf-life than apple cider.

Ingredients

  • boneless skinless chicken breasts - chicken thighs can be used, but the cook time will reduce by 5-7 minutes.
  • flour
  • cornstarch
  • garlic powder
  • salt
  • black pepper
  • paprika
  • olive oil
  • butter
  • onion - I prefer to use a sweet onion, but white or yellow work great too.
  • apples - I like to use a tart apple, like a Macintosh, for Apple Cider Chicken Skillet.
  • apple cider - Do not go for apple juice. The sauce will become very sweet.

Instructions

  1. Pre-heat oven to 350°F.
  2. Place flour in a rimmed plate. Mix in garlic powder, salt, pepper, paprika, and cornstarch.
  3. Season the chicken lightly with salt. One chicken breast at a time, place the chicken into the flour mixture. Press the mixture to the chicken until it is completely coated.
  4. In an oven safe skillet, heat the butter and olive oil over medium-high heat. Add the chicken and cook for about 3 minutes on each side. The chicken should become golden brown. If the chicken begins to scorch reduce the heat.
  5. Remove chicken from the pan. Place onion and apples into the pan and cook for about 3 minutes. Add the apple cider and stir into the onions and apples.
  6. Place the chicken back into the pan and nestle is in the onion and apple mixture.
  7. Place the skillet into the oven and bake for 20 minutes. After 20 minutes, remove the skillet from the oven and check the chicken's internal temperature with a meat thermometer. The internal temperature should be 165°F.
  8. Serving suggestion is garlic mashed potatoes and green beans.
