texas green beans in a skillet

Texas Roadhouse Green Beans are one of my favorite simple side dishes. Cooked in a skillet with bacon, onions, chicken broth, and garlic make a simple and memorable side dish.

Green beans are a staple side dish in our house. I love to make my Green Bean and Bacon Au Gratin or Creamy Van Abel's style Green Beans, but this copycat recipe for Texas Roadhouse Green Beans is my all-time favorite.

If you have not had the pleasure of sampling these green beans at the restaurant you need to make them at home. Your taste buds will thank you, and it is so easy to make.

The reason I love these beans is that they have all the best flavors- sweet, salty, smokey, and savory. They always are always quick to be eaten when I serve the green beans to my family.

I also love that these beans are really versatility and can be served along side nearly anything as a side dish!

Ingredients

  • Green Beans - Canned green beans are used to make an authentic Texas Roadhouse style green beans.
  • Bacon - Bacon will make the recipe like Texas Roadhouse. You can use turkey bacon or diced ham as well, but the flavor will be slightly different.
  • Chicken Broth - I like to use chicken brown, but vegetable broth is another great option.
  • Onion- I like to use a white or yellow onion in my beans.
  • Garlic- Garlic powder can be used as well.
  • Butter– I prefer to use salted butter.
  • Sugar- white granulated is what I prefer to use. I do not recommend powdered, but brown would be tasty.
  • Black Pepper
  • green beans bacon, butter, onion in a skillet
  • green beans bacon, butter, onion in a skillet

Instructions

  1. Place chopped bacon in a large rimmed skillet on med-high heat until completely cooked.
  2. Remove bacon from pan and drain.
  3. Add green beans, bacon, chicken broth, butter, onion, garlic, and sugar to skillet.
  4. Bring to a simmer, and then lower heat to medium-low.
  5. Cover the skillet and let simmer about 10 minutes, or until green beans are tender.
  6. Serve.

Slowcooker Instructions

Texas Roadhouse Green Beans can be made in the crockpot. Add cooked bacon, green beans, butter, onion, garlic, and sugar to a slowcooker and cook for 2-3 hours on low heat.

Canned or Fresh Green Beans?

Canned green beans are used to make an authentic Texas Roadhouse style green beans. However, you could use frozen or fresh green beans. If you are using frozen, thaw them first. If you are using fresh blanch the green beans prior to following the recipe steps. Kale or spinach are also delicious in place for green beans to create a "greens" version.

I recommend canned for this recipe because it is the least time consuming. I also think the texture and flavor is true to the restaurant version. Fresh green beans are great, but make sure to give them a quick cook before following the recipe.

I have not tried them in the oven, but I would think so. I might make the bacon in advance so it gets crisp.

Can I make these a day ahead and heat them up in a crockpot the next day?

I have not tried that before, but I think it would be fine. I think the only thing impacted would be the bacon. I think it will be not so crisp. However, it will be fully cooked and I think the flavor will still be delicious.

The ingredients call for pepper, but it’s not listed anywhere in the instructions. Should I go ahead and add it?

I love this recipe and have made it many times! It’s always a hit with the family. I was wondering if I could freeze it in batches to easily reheat later, or would it get all mushy?

I have not frozen it before. I would try with a small batch and let it thaw well before heating to prevent the beans from getting too mushy. I imagine that it will not have the same texture, but will be tasty.

Spot on. Delicious. Will now be in rotation. I keep bacon grease in the fridge so a quick hack just use a couple scoops if you don’t have time to make bacon.

I have not tried it made with bacon bits, but I think it will work. It may not be as "saucy"

I have 2 questions. After you cook the bacon, do you drain the bacon fat or cook the green beans in it?

Also, can you use frozen green beans and if so, should they be thawed first?

    Thanks.

I do not drain and use it as part of the sauce.

Thaw the green beans first because there will be too much liquid if they are cooked from frozen.

        The recipe instructions state:
"2. Remove bacon from pan and drain",
        but response above states that
"I do not drain and use it as part of the sauce" -
which is correct? Do you use the bacon grease or not?
        Thank you for the clarification.
