burger on a plate with fries

Wisconsin Butter Burger is a Wisconsin delicacy. The burger is made from fresh ground beef, seasoned, and seared on a griddle with butter. Served on a buttery toasted bun with American cheese makes a Wisconsin tradition!

Butter. Buttah. Buuuuuutttttteeeerrrrr.

That is what this burger is about today. It is not healthy. If you are looking for a healthy burger- this is not for you. However, if you came for a Wisconsin tradition you are in the right place.

Did you know that Seymour, Wisconsin claims touts that they invented the burger? Back in 1885, a man named “Hamburger Charlie” Nagreen, allegedly made the decision that it was easier for people to eat the meatballs (cooked in butter, of course) he was selling between two slices of bread.

Fast forward to 1936, Kroll’s Hamburgers in Green Bay, WI opened and placed a signature pat of butter on the top of their burger. Solly's Grille in Milwaukee, WI opened soon after and also featured a butter soaked burger.

Now days, butter burgers have been made popular by the Wisconsin fast food chain, Culver's and their signature Culver's Butter Burger.

I am a Green Bay native and grew up eating Kroll's butter burgers, but no matter who was the original creator of this indulgent sandwich it is so delicious.

We do have Culvers here in Michigan but I have never been to one. I really need to remedy that. These sound delicious.

These do sound sooooo good! I don't think we have Culver's out here so I'll have to make my own.

Yum! I remember eating these growing up at a local pharmacy counter. We'd bike down there as kids. Nothing like a little extra fat to put your high fat meal over the top 🙂 !

We don't have a Culver's in my area, but we do have a Steak & Shake that serves a butter burger that is so good!

Looks tasty, but that's not how you make a butter burger.
