Honey BBQ Chicken Sloppy Joes are a quick and easy variation on a traditional sloppy joe. Ground chicken cooked in a savory and sweet honey BBQ sauce. Served on a toasted bun with crispy bacon and cheddar cheese.

Sloppy Joes are a signature dinner in our house because it is super easy, and I know that my kids will eat then without complaint. I have a traditional slow cooker sloppy joe recipe that we love, but sometimes it is fun to switch things up.

I love to make my Philly Cheese Steak Sloppy Joes for unique sloppy joe spin, but these Honey BBQ Chicken Sloppy Joes are absolutely amazing.

My Honey BBQ Chicken Sloppy Joes are made with, you guessed it, lean ground chicken. I sauce them with a mixture of ketchup, bbq sauce, honey, soy sauce, and a few seasonings. These are best served with crispy bacon and sliced cheddar on a toasted bun.

I served these to my boys and they each devoured two sandwiches! They are bacon lovers so that might have pushed it over the top, but it was a rave review that I was happy to take!

What Do You Need To Make Honey BBQ Chicken Sloppy Joes?

  • ketchup
  • bbq sauce
  • honey
  • hot sauce
  • soy sauce
  • garlic powder
  • salt
  • black pepper
  • ground chicken
  • small onion
  • bacon
  • cheddar cheese
  • kaiser buns

Cooks Tips

To cut a corner, the pre-cooked bacon sliced are a lifesaver on weeknight. Typically, I warm them in a pan and they are crisp and ready in a few minutes.

I prefer to use a sweet and rich bbq sauce for this recipe because I like to get a thicken sauce on the meat. If your favorite is a thinner bbq sauce it will work fine, but the sauce will not be as thick.

Don't skip the bun toast! It makes things so much yummier! I will toast them on a griddle, or it is easy to do it quickly in the oven for about 2 minutes at 300°F.

How Do You Make This Recipe?

  1. In a medium bowl, mix together ketchup, bbq, honey, hot sauce, soy sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Set aside.
  2. In a rimmed skillet, cook the chicken and the onion over medium heat. While chicken is cooking, cook the bacon till crisp and set aside.
  3. Once the chicken is completely cooked and onion is soft add the sauce to the skillet.
  4. Turn heat to low and allow the sauce to lightly simmer for 5 minutes.
  5. Prepare the buns as the meat simmer. Toast in the oven or flat top. The buns will brown quickly so keep a close eye on the buns.
  6. Remove buns from heat and add the cheese and bacon. Finish with sloppy joe filling. Serve immediately.

Let's Talk About Ground Chicken!

Ground chicken is one of my favorite proteins to use. I like the flavor more than ground turkey, but it is versatile to use them interchangeably.

Ground chicken is typically located with the other packaged chicken at the store. Typically, there are different types like all white meat, all dark meat, or a mix of the two.

I prefer to get the white meat ground chicken because I prefer the flavor, but I have used the dark meat as well and it is delicious.

Ground chicken can be substituted for ground beef or turkey (like in my Honey BBQ Chicken Sloppy Joes), but make sure to completely cook it before serving. I actually prefer ground chicken in casserole that call for chopped chicken.

Here are a few of my favorite recipes using ground chicken!

Cheesy Chicken Spaghetti Casserole

As soon as you mention honey, I'm right there. It's such a fabulous ingredient and works brilliantly with both sweet and savoury. I bet your sloppy joes are delicious. It's my husbands birthday in a couple of days time, he'd love me for ever if I made this for him.
