My Ham and Cheese Gnocchi Skillet is made in one-pan with simple and delicious ingredients. Tender gnocchi cook with ham and peas in a creamy sauce. Topped with cheese and broiled makes a great weeknight meal or a great leftover ham recipe.

One-pan meals are a favorite of mine because they are so versatile and easy on a weeknight. My Ham and Gnocchi Skillet is a family favorite because my husband and kids love ham. It is also a great post-holiday dish to use leftover ham.

This recipe cooks in under 30-minutes and the single pan makes a very easy clean-up.

Ham and Cheese Gnocchi Skillet is packed with tender ham, peas, gnocchi, and lots of cheese. The flavors are savory and balanced. I also like the texture of the gnocchi after it cooks in the creamy sauce.

I love the browned cheese on top of a skillet or casserole, and popping this meal under the broiler for a few minutes gives a delicious broiled cheese topping.

My family loves this recipe, and I am happy when I get a stamp of approval from my kiddos- they can be a tough crowd! This recipe also heat-up really well for leftover the the following day.

Ingredients

  • olive oil
  • small onion- One of my favorite shortcuts is buying frozen chopped onion because it makes the prep so easy!
  • ham- leftover chopped ham is a great option. You can also used store bought diced ham as well.
  • water
  • gnocchi- I buy self-stable gnocchi in the pasta section of my store.
  • frozen peas- fresh peas work great too!
  • heavy cream
  • black pepper
  • mozzarella- monterrey jack or baby swiss are great options as well.
  • sharp cheddar cheese
  • parsley- dried works great if you do not have fresh.

Let's Talk Ham

Leftover ham is one of my favorite proteins to create around because the options are endless. For my Ham and Cheese Gnocchi Skillet make sure to chop my ham into small pieces for this recipe, but my store sell packaged diced ham.

Can you use chopped deli meat for this recipe? Sure! The ham will have a a different texture since the slices are thin, and I think it will taste delicious.

Here are a few of my favorite recipes using leftover ham:

Cheesy Ham Broccoli and Rice Casserole, Old Fashion Ham Salad, One-Pot Ham and Cheese Pasta, Scalloped Potatoes and Ham, and Slow Cooker Pea Soup with Potatoes and Ham.

What About The Cheese?

My gnocchi skillet it packed with creamy goodness from the cream, but I like to top the skillet with cheese and allow it to broil and slightly brown.

It is important to have a cheese that melts well, and I love to use a blend of mozzarella and cheddar. Monterrey jack, colby, baby swiss, or muenster are also great options for a substitution for mozzarella. You could even add a little sprinkle of parmesan for a little extra salty nutty flavor.

Instrictions

  1. Heat the olive oil in a large oven safe skillet. Add onions to skillet and cook until tender. Add ham to skillet and cook until ham is heated and starting to slightly brown.
  2. Add peas to skillet and stir. Add gnocchi to skillet, water, pepper, and heavy cream. Stir and let cook for about 6-7 minutes. The gnocchi should be tender and sauce thickened.
  3. Top with cheeses and place skillet under the broiler for 2 to 3 minutes until cheese is melted and starts to brown.
  4. Remove from oven, sprinkle with parsley and serve.

Cooking Store-Bough Gnocchi

I am all for the love and time put into homemade gnocchi, but I typically use store bought for my Ham and Cheese Gnocchi Skillet.

There is nothing like homemade, but store-bought gnocchi is delicious in this dish. Plus, it is a lot less work!

Typically, you will boil store-bought gnocchi in boiling salted water. However, in this recipe, the gnocchi cooks in the liquid in the skillet. This method quickly turns the gnocchi into light and creamy bites.
