Classic Butter Spritz Cookies are a classic holiday cookie. Using a cookie press makes detailed cookies which are decorated with sprinkles. The cookies are buttery with a delicious almond vanilla flavor.
I received products from sponsor companies to aid in the creation of the #ChristmasCookiesWeek recipes. All opinions are mine alone.
Spritz cookies are classical traditional Christmas cookies. Buttery, sweet, and in beautiful shapes and colors. I love spritz cookies, and they are shockingly easy to make.
This week I am celebrating Christmas and Holiday cookies with a few friends, and I thought my Classic Butter Spriz Cookies are a perfect way to start the week. This week there is a giveaway with wonderful prizes to get you into the baking spirit. Please do not forget to enter at the end the post.
The word “spritz” comes from the German word spritzen which means “to squirt.” This refers to squirting or pushing the cookie dough through a cookie press to make shapes.
Spritz cookies are a lot like shortbread cookies, but they are a little less crumbly because they contain an egg. I like to use a little almond extract and vanilla extract in mine because it tastes so delicious with the sweet butter flavors in the cookie.
Ingreidents
- all-purpose flour
- salted butter softened
- confectioners' sugar
- egg
- almond extract
- vanilla extract
- sprinkles
- Stand Mixer
- Cookie Press
What is a Cookie Press?
The OXO Good Grips Cookie Press is my favorite cookie press. It is easy to use and it results in delicious cookies.
For Classic Butter Spritz Cookies, a cookie pressing is not required because you can pipe with a sealable bag or arrange with a scoop on a cookie sheet. HOWEVER, to get the cute cookie designs it is necessary you your success.
Each cookie press will have their own directions, and make sure to read carefully. It is also a good idea to allow yourself a few practice tries while getting the hang of the cookies press.
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400°F. Whisk the flour and salt together and set aside.
- In a medium bowl, cream together the butter and sugar. Add the egg, almond extract, and vanilla extract.
- Gradually mix in the dry ingredients.
- Fill a cookie press with dough and press cookies about 1-inch apart onto an ungreased cookie sheet. If desired, add sprinkles.
- Bake for 7 minutes. Remove from oven and transfer to a cooling rack.

I may just have to break out my mom's retro spritz cookie gun this year...and hope that I don't burn my whole house down. I forgot how much I missed this Christmas classic! Thanks for the sweet reminder!
Christie
These are totally on my bucket list to make. I keep thinking I'll get one of those cookie presses and make them. But I don't have one. LOL
