Creamy Wild Rice and Sausage Soup is filled with sausage, wild rice, fresh veggies, herbs, and a bit of cream. Delicious and ready in 45 minutes!
I don't know about you, but there is nothing better than a big bowl of soup as the weather gets colder. I keep my Creamy Wild Rice and Sausage Soup really simple and used a simple ground pork sausage, chopped veggies, herbs and a bit of cream.
This soup is filling and so satisfying. My entire family loves when it is on our menu. My oldest often tells me, "I love this" in between bites.
Soup is always a favorite, and my favorite recipe are the ones that are weeknight friendly. I also love any meal that is delicious for leftovers the next day. I am a teacher and love something I can warm-up quickly during my lunch break.
The wild rice is really the star of this soup. I love to use a wild rice blend, and it adds a delicious flavor and heartiness with the sausage and creamy soup.
Ingredients
- pork sausage- I like to use an unseasoned pork sausage, but seasoned works too.
- white onion - yellow onion work great!
- celery
- carrots
- dried thyme- fresh thyme works really well too.
- uncooked wild rice
- reduced sodium chicken broth
- heavy cream - half-and-half or milk works well too.
- flour
- Salt and Pepper
- Soup Kettle
Substitutions
Pork sausage is great, but you can use ground turkey or chicken as well. I also love to use sliced smoked sausage as well.
Heavy cream add extra richness, but milk or half-and-half are great substitutions.
I love to use a blend on carrots, onions, and celery in my Creamy Wild Rice and Sausage Soup, but you can add mushrooms, peppers, sweet potatoes, or other favorite veggies.
Instructions
- In a soup pot, brown sausage over medium heat.
- Add onion, celery and carrots to the sausage and cook till tender. Add thyme and stir.
- Add broth and rice and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to bring soup to a slow simmer. Cook till rice is tender (depending on the wild rice blend you use times may differ, but 30 minutes is around the time it takes to cook).
- Whisk cream and flour together and add to soup. Stir.
- Season the Creamy Wild Rice and Sausage Soup with salt and pepper and serve.

I had a wild rice soup at a restaurant and have been looking to duplicate it. I finally found it! This soup is really good, delicious! The sausage adds good flavor. I didn’t use a blend of wild rice just plain wild rice. The wild rice I had takes longer to cook than 30 minutes so I pre cooked it for 30 mins then added the rice to the soup to finish out the remaining cooking time of 30 more minutes. Thank you for the recipe! It’s my favorite!

what did you use for wild rice?
Ashley Lecker
I use a long grain wild rice.

This is GOOD SOUP!! My husband requested spicy Italian sausage and I chose half and half versus the full cream. Texture and flavor are perfect.
