taco dip with topping in a red plate

My Creamy Taco Dip is great for game day or whenever the urge to snack comes on. Made with seasoned cream cheese and sour cream to create a creamy base and topped with your favorite taco toppings to create a cold taco dip that is out of this world delicious. Added directions to taco meat or ground beef to make a delicious taco dip with meat too!

My Creamy Taco Dip is an appetizer that my family requests for every game day. It is so easy to make, and even easier to eat!

I use cream cheese, tangy sour cream, taco season, and all my favorite topping like lettuce, cheese, tomatoes, and olives. Chilled before serving, and scooped on tortilla chips make a super easy appetizer that everyone will adored.

I love to serve my taco dip cold, but sometimes a warm dip is what is on the menu. This recipe can easily be adapted to make a warm dip by topping the base with cheese, baking, and adding toppings.

Creamy Taco Dip is a great appetizer for game day at a tailgate or at home. It is also favorite for movie night, or a get together with friends.

Ingredients

  • cream cheese - regular or reduced fat cream cheese works well
  • sour cream- regular or reduced fat works well
  • taco seasoning packet
  • shredded lettuce -pre-shredded iceberg or chopped romaine work well
  • shredded cheddar cheese - colby, monterrey jack, or a blend work well in place of cheddar cheese
  • tomatoes
  • sliced black olives
  • scallions - green onions too
  • Tortilla chips
  • 9-inch pie plate- 9 or 10 inch work fine.

Let's Talk Toppings!

Toppings are the best part of taco dip, am I right?

My Creamy Taco Dip uses shredded lettuce, shredded cheese, chopped tomatoes, sliced black olives, and sliced scallion (or green onions).

Other delicious topping to use on the dip are:

  • Chopped jalapenos
  • Salsa
  • Chopped bell peppers
  • fresh cilantro
  • Avocado/Guacamole
  • Chopped chipotle peppers
  • Corn
  • Black or pinto beans
  • Refried beans
  • Taco meat or ground beef to make a taco dip with meat

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make the base of the dip in advance?

Sure! Make the dip in advance and store covered in the fridge. Creamy Taco Dip is also delicious all on it's own.

Can I use just cream cheese in the dip or do I need to use both cream cheese and sour cream in my taco dip recipe?

I like to use both because I like the texture. You can use just cream cheese, but I would increase it to 24 oz. The taco dip with cream cheese only will be thicker without the sour cream, but it will still taste great.

I like spicy food- can I add something to increase the heat?

Yes! I suggest adding canned or jarred chopped jalapenos to the creamy taco dip base. You could also add them as a topping as well.

Can I serve this dip warm?

Yes, simply place the cream dip base into and oven safe baking dish, like a pie plate. Top with shredded cheese. Bake at 350°F for 15 minutes. Remove and add additional toppings.

Can I add ground beef or taco meat to this recipe?

Yes, the warm meat can be added on top of the base then toppings added to turn a cold taco dip to a warm taco dip. The other preparation option to make a taco dip with meat is to place meat and cheese over the creamy base and then bake as detailed in the question above. Shredded chicken or meat substitute can also be used.

We usually only do one 8 oz cream
Cheese to cup of sour cream. I’m excited to give this a try!

Thank you! It's yummy. I like to throw some jalpenos on too. Much better than store bought. 😛
