Salisbury Steak with Mushrooms Onion Gravy is a traditional skillet meal. This recipe features seasoned ground beef patties and a smooth rich mushroom and onion gravy. It is delicious served alongside mashed potatoes and peas.

What was your favorite t.v. dinner growing up?  I was a Salisbury steak girl and loved the mushroom gravy. These days I have moved away from microwave meals, but will get a hankering of a Salisbury steak every now and then.

All of my childhood memories of watching Hey Dude or Salute Your Shorts  while eating an occasional t.v. dinner.  I should add that my mom did not make this regularly, and it was a special treat….. If she reads this and would not what people to think that she only fed us food from the microwave!

The flavor of the meat is fantastic and the gravy was filled with tender onions and pieces of meaty mushrooms. Salisbury steak gravy is truly the star, and my recipe for brown gravy is so smooth and rich. The addition of the red wine in the gravy gives an extra touch of richness, and one of my favorite flavors in the gravy.

Ingredients

For Steaks:

  • lean ground beef
  • unseasoned breadcrumbs
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • garlic powder
  • onion powder
  • eggs
  • salt
  • ground black pepper
  • butter
  • vegetable oil

For Gravy:

  • yellow onion
  • mushrooms
  • tomato paste
  • flour
  • beef broth
  • dry red wine
  • salt
  • ground black pepper

Substitutions

Ground turkey or a blend of ground turkey and ground beef work well for the Salisbury steak patties.

Minced onions are delicious in the hamburger steak patties if you do not have onion powder. If you make the steaks with minced onions, make sure to cut them very small. One small onion will be create a sufficient amount.

The gravy in Salisbury Steak with Mushroom Onion Gravy has red wine. If you prefer not to use wine additional beef broth works great!

Side Dish Suggestion

I love to serve my Salisbury Steak with Mushroom Onion Gravy with mashed potatoes.

My Roasted Garlic Mashed Potatoes , Sour Cream and Chive Mashed Potatoes, or my Make-Ahead Mashed Potatoes.

For the true nostalgic feel I serve my hamburger steaks with peas or corn. A green salad would be delicious as well!
