I use russets and keep the skins on

Instructions
Place peas in the bottom of the slow cooker.
Next, add the ham, carrots, onion, celery, and potatoes. Add salt, pepper, and thyme. Add water and broth.
Allow soup to cook on low 8 hours. Gently stir the soup till all ingredients are evenly mixed. Season with additional salt and pepper, if necessary.
